With over 7,000 liters of fuel and oil on board, a derelict freighter on the Fraser River posed a significant threat. As well, this vessel had already broken moorage in 2014 and drifted to shore creating a significant risk to the surrounding environment. The situation required immediate action, so the Canadian Coast Guard contacted Barnacle Systems for help — they needed to know the health of the vessel quickly, remotely, and without shore power.
The overall goal of the Canadian Coast Guard was to receive an alert in the unlikely event that the vessel broke moorage or began to sink. The BRNKL Rapid Deploy was the ideal solution. The product’s core features include a global cellular connection to enable remote monitoring, GPS monitoring with a geofence, and pitch/heel/list monitoring to monitor the state of the vessel in the water. In addition, four high water switches were connected to the BRNKL Rapid Deploy system’s inputs, which were then run by cable down to areas of the vessel that were susceptible to taking on water.
Barnacle Systems has been awarded an Innovative Solutions Canada Testing Stream contract with the Canadian Coast Guard in order to test the Rapid Deploy BRNKL’s new compatibility with the Iridium Satellite constellation. This testing will be conducted in Q2/Q3 of 2021 in order to validate the operation of the Rapid Deploy system at various latitudes from southern Canada to the Arctic. The testing will also validate the operation of the system on vessels with hulls made from wood, steel, aluminum, and fiberglass.
