BRNKL Rapid Deploy
Remote vessel monitoring to protect our oceans
The BRNKL Rapid Deploy is a remote monitoring system for tracking and receiving alerts from abandoned boats that threaten coastlines. It’s a portable and solar-powered system that provides notifications over cellular and satellite communications if a hazardous boat becomes a threat to the environment or to maritime navigation.
The system is placed on board a vessel of concern, and sends alerts to the managing group if the boat begins to drag its anchor, begins to sink, catches fire, or if an intruder gets on board. The product features remote monitoring, GPS monitoring with a geofence, and pitch/heel/list monitoring to monitor the state of the vessel in the water.
Check the status of any boat, whenever, wherever, from your mobile device or web browser.
Track an unpowered ship or barge with the included 50W folding solar panel.
Send alerts by e-mail or app notification to everyone who needs to know when a boat needs attention.
Easily transport and deploy the system without extra equipment or manpower.
With over 7,000 liters of fuel and oil on board, a derelict freighter on the Fraser River posed a significant threat. As well, this vessel had already broken moorage in 2014 and drifted to shore creating a significant risk to the surrounding environment. The situation required immediate action, so the Canadian Coast Guard contacted Barnacle Systems for help — they needed to know the health of the vessel quickly, remotely, and without shore power.
The overall goal of the Canadian Coast Guard was to receive an alert in the unlikely event that the vessel broke moorage or began to sink. The BRNKL Rapid Deploy was the ideal solution. The product’s core features include a global cellular connection to enable remote monitoring, GPS monitoring with a geofence, and pitch/heel/list monitoring to monitor the state of the vessel in the water. In addition, four high water switches were connected to the BRNKL Rapid Deploy system’s inputs, which were then run by cable down to areas of the vessel that were susceptible to taking on water.
As of July 2023, over 40 Rapid Deploy units have been delivered to seven regions across Canada for the Canadian Coast Guard to remotely monitor hazardous vessels. Read the announcement here.
The BRNKL Rapid Deploy was recognized in 2022 with a national “Safeguarding the Environment” award from the Canadian Safe Boating Association.
Barnacle Systems was nominated as a result of its collaboration with Innovative Solutions Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard to test the BRNKL Rapid Deploy for allowing the Canadian Coast Guard to remotely monitor derelict, abandoned, or hazardous vessels.
